My Sis Ritha's Smocked Maternity Top
This is a very simple pregnant blouse done for my sis. A minimalist and a simple person, she requests no laces or trimmings, no complicated details except a narrow smocked and embroidered panel across the empire line.
The Style: She wants her blouse to be clean cut and hopefully still can be worn even after she gives birth. So I think the best option is to use an insert and then attach the lower piece with a wide pleat (this is for her big belly.. :)) instead of gathering.
One thing you must consider when you smock an insert is not to stretch the smocked panel too much. The reason is that the lower piece (in this case the upper piece too) will tend to create unsightly 'wavy' effect if you overstretch and this is quite obvious since the piece is not gathered. So, to solve this prob, what I normally do is using stable fabric (e.g American cotton) as an insert, or pleat wider panel by using 60" fabric. For a large size I will have to simply join to another piece of fabric and neatening the seam before I start pleating. Another effective method is by unpicking 5 ~ 6cm at each side before tying the pleating threads so that my panel is readily wider.
The smocking: I used 'Morning Glory' design as in AS&E Issue #37 and add medium size red cast-on roses... I think those roses stand out among the turquoise and dk grey florals. I added tiny cylinder japanese beads too while I smock.
The blouse has 14" zipper at the back and finishes with two ties to control fullness. I hope this fits her and suits her style...
My WIP is finishing Cabut for my bro and a smocked sundress for a 6-year-old girl inspired by my recent visit to BTRR, both projects are RED... :). And, I should remind myself that I also need to complete two smocking blouses for the two MAK SUs in the family.. :)
Till next project, gud bye!
